Panama - Boquete area
Hotel Fundadores, elev. 1100m, Boquete, Chiriqui
Province, Panama
10 August located 6-7 km NW of the center of Boquete.
William A. at the point when the road
from Boquete crosses the Quebrado El Oso
the road was no longer passable for our
Volkswagen (but would have been no trouble
for a 4-wheel drive vehicle). We returned
to the river crossing and then hiked up a
path NW up the river bed and vertically up
the NE canyon wall until we reached the ridge,
about above the canyon. The relatively level
area between the ridge at this point and the
road to the E is mostly cleared for coffee
fields or other agriculture, but the steep
canyon slopes were apparently virgin rain
forest as far up the canyon as we could see.
The steep canyon walls and deep canyon itself
was very striking and beautiful. We looked
for salamanders under suitable cover
objects on the slopes, in the coffee fields, and
also in dense secondary growth areas
adjacent to the fields, but none were
found. Jim Lynch did find a Rhadinea sp.
inside a decaying log at the edge between a
corn field and coffee field along the
ridge above the canyon, elevation 1744m.
