Haddan, James 1975 Journal 9 Feb Hastings Reservation, Samuel Valley, Monterey Co. Calif. wide logs, making them less readily observed. However, I am using the same method of searching search that I use in other parts of the genus' range where I've found them much more readily. Maybe they practically favor rocks and then only occupy the scattered areas in the res. when rocks are abundant. Yesterday PM went to the top of Red Hill, "Saddle" N of the peak, and the S. facing slope E of the Lower Chapparal patch. It was raining constantly. Turning of almost several hundred small lava rocks revealed several Batrachoseps. They were especially abundant on the top of Red Hill under isolated rocks lying on the ground (vs. in clusters). This is certainly confirms similar observations from the same location. Eight Eumeces' of various sizes were found in the same manner, all apparently inactive and hibernating. Last night Walt Koenig and I went night driving in the rain between Arroyo Seco and a point ~4 mi W. of the reservation. Hyla regilla were heard calling at several points along Friel Creek. This marks at least two rain sinks along County Rd C (6 W of the res. were found to have bleeding chorioidea
