Panama - Boquete area
Hotel Fundadores ~1100 meters, Boquete, Chiriqui
Province, Panama
10 August The scattered oaks provided a good canopy over
abundant fallen and cut logs. The elevation
was ~2200 m along the El Salto trail just
directly above a finca with sheep, rabbits, +
geese. Working this area for ~1/2 hrs between
11:30 - 1:00 we uncovered 10 salamanders
all under logs or inside rotting stumps. Large
individuals reached up to 10 cm SVL and were
entirely black while smaller individuals
SVL 4-5 cm were black with fine white speckling
all over and some faint silver blotches
on the tail. Feet were moderately webbed.
This is apparently a new species. An
additional specimen was found by me later
in the day on our return at ~ 5 PM under a
log. The only other individual of this species
found was by Jim Lynch under a small rock
alongside the road where it passes through an area of
secondary growth at 2295 m. The only other salamanders
found were three other individuals of a different
species found under logs along a roadside
at 2600 m. This area was at a relatively level
section through original forest. Two of the
salamanders were found adjacent to a small cleared
clearing made by a bulldozer where a
