Panama - Boquete area
Hotel Fundadores, ~1100 meters Boquete, Chiriqui
Province, Panama
16 August In terms of vegetation, the original forest is almost
entirely absent from the lower slopes along the road
where there is extensive agricultural development
for the growing of coffee, potatoes, corn and other crops.
The only original forest remains in isolated clumps
along the rivers W of Boquete, and on the
steeper slopes. At around 2200 m the original
forest seems intact with the road removal
the only cutting off being apparently for
road-making purposes. Away from the road
the original forest comes in at lower elevations,
however the slopes are very steep and
are dissected by deep ravines; access would
be difficult.
Except for turning rods and logs along
the disturbed area at roadside, there proved to
be few areas allowing which we were able to
search for salamanders. The lower slopes
and level areas were mostly used for agriculture
and few trees remained. As already mentioned
the forested areas were steep with deep ravines,
and thickly forested; whenever these areas
were entered and cover objects turned no
salamanders were found. The first ones we encountered
in a secondary growth oak forest where
