Panama - Boquete area
Hotel Fundadores, ~1100 meters, Boquete, Chiriqui
Province, Panama
10 August small village of El Salto. The army maps proved
to be outdated in that a foot path indicated branching off
of this road less than a km from El Salto (and
leading onward to Chiriqui Volcano) had been
widened to an automobile sized road and
we drove onward along this road. About 10 or 12 km
past this point the road proved too rough for
our VW Beetle but still could have easily
been negotiated with a four-wheel drive
vehicle with high clearance (as there had been
no pavement since leaving Boquete, the road
going increasingly rockier as one progressed).
We continued along this road by foot from
this point (elev. 1775 m) and stayed along it for
the rest of the day. The army map indicates the
road as a cart track continuing W from Boquete
circling the S flank of Volcan de Chiriqui
until an approximate elevation of 2700 m where
it ends. However, I continued in that direction
to 2140 m and jinked slightly less than
this, and the road was still suitable for
easy 4-wheel drive travel, having been
evidently widened and maintained by
bulldozers, etc, and showed no signs of
stopping anywhere near that point.
