Hauken, James 1975 9 Feb Journal Hastings Reservation, Carmel Valley, Monterey Co. Calif Arrived here evening of 7Feb to add more amphibian data to survey. Critical rain deficiency in shortage which had been plaguing Calif ended abruptly ~10 days ago with several days of rain which has continued off & on until the present. Hastings had ~4" in a 48 hour period last week with additional rain yesterday & last night. The lane is muddy, all three creeks are running, and the woods are wet. Yesterday AM visited the Arnold property N of the ridge running ESE from the Arnold Cabin, and E of the 1st depression W of " ". As stated above the woods were wet: both the litter layer & logs were damp and standing water was present in upturned oak bases as well as standing trees. Despite these apparently favorable conditions, turning every log & rock encountered revealed only 6 salamanders: 2 Ensatina + 4 Batrachoseps. Three of the latter were found under rocks in an especially moist area below Arnold Spring; the fourth inside a rotten log. The status of Batrachoseps remains a mystery. The habitat seems suitable for them but they are not found to be abundant. Possibly they are occupying the leaf litter itself and hard to reach places
