a number of times several feet above the ground
under the base of fallen, rolling fir trees. The
number of juvenile individuals found has
been high - over 1/3 of all Ameides found
were < 3 cm (S-V). These individuals hadn't yet
developed the adult pattern and still had
a dorsal suffusion of fine light speckling,
giving the dorsum a cloudy appearance.
Perhaps Ameides deposits eggs soon after the
first rains in the fall and these are this year's
hatchlings. Several small Ensatina were
also found. There is some lizard activity
apparently due to the warm, sunny weather.
Walt Koenig reported seeing Sceloporus
active on Arnold Field on 16 Jan. I found
one Cnemidus active in a sunny clearing apparently E of
Robinson Prairie. Other interesting reptiles
were found included other Cnemidus, two
Cerrhinotus (one sub-adult, and one
juvenile ~5cm S-V possibly representing last
summer's young), and one Contia tenuis.
No Taricha were found in terrestrial sites
nor in any of the 5 or 6 sites checked in
Finch + Robinson Creeks. Pygmy owls were
heard calling in the evening early to Lower Sam
and during the day on P.O. Hill, and one
