1200 hrs trip.

Continuing W on Hwy 80 we stopped at 6.7 mi E
of Ciudad del May after Sam spotted a Sceloporus
basking on a rock alongside the road. This turned
out to be the best locality yet encountered. The
area comprises a slightly rolling former lava
field overlooking the Central Plateau to the W.
There are several low (1-2' high) outcrops of basalt
alongside the road. Much of the area is
used for agriculture and here the cleared rocks
have been arranged in fence rows 2-5' high.
The lower-lying uncleared areas have scattered
yucca to short yuccas and low shrubs. In
addition there is an oak-dominated forest
(at least 3 sp.) of tall scattered oaks and
little understory cover. In all, four species
of Sceloporus, one sp. of Cnemidophorus, and
one sp. of Scincella were found. The Cnemidophorus
(2 by Sam, 1 by Allen) were found in the low
yucca + shrub area. Philip Green found the
Scincella in the leaf litter beneath a fallen log
adjacent to the oak woodland. The Sceloporus
may be broken down into two types,
large & small, with two species in each type.
The smaller species consisted of S. variabilis
found mostly on trees + boulders in the oak forest
