Mexico trip: Cd. Valles → Puerto de la Jorro
6 May
0700 hrs several rocks and fallen logs, and flowing
(cont'd) water.
Continuing S we passed thru Tayamanclule
and decided to continue on towards the town
of Puerto de la Jorro, located a few km N of
Jacala, Hidalgo, to examine some local
limestone cave localities for Chiropterotriton masaueri,
which have previously been
taken from this area. The road S of Tayamanclule
rises steadily up the Sierra Madre Oriental
towards Jacala with steadily decreasing temps
(a welcome relief from the conditions in the
lowland which were probably the most severe
which we've met up with yet - warm temps
(94° in the shade at Hotel Cardonga), bright sun,
and high humidity). At Puerto de la Jorro
the road enters a relatively flat stretch
along the crest characterized by extensive
limestone outcrops. Many small holes are
evident, both open + closed. Sam descended
into one which went down about 20' and
stopped. No bats were found. Others were
deemed too deep and narrow to descend
into. Today we will look for other,
more suitable caves,
