Mexico trip : Ahuacatlan area
4 May
1100 hrs. seen flashing alongside the road, but
(cont'd) they too were many and none were collected.
Time of observation : 0945-1130 hrs.
We continued E on Mex 120 into the
state of San Luis Potosi and the town of
Ahuacatlan. Some Street had been given by Las Redely
locality data for caves in the area, and
we attempted to locate them. In Ahuacatlan
we looked for the Cueva de la Iglesia
(Cave of the Church). After many blank
stares or directions of dubious validity (including
one man who simply left us at the Camichin)
we found an old man who offered
to show us the path to a cave ~.5 km E
of Ahuacatlan which is the source of the town's
water. The path he showed us was
~200 yds W of the correct one which caused
a walk of an extra km or two covering ~500
vertical feet. However, we found the cave
at the base of a ravine below the road and
a family was there doing their wash; apparently
many families in the area use it as their
source of water. The cave is ~15' wide for
about 40' while it descends at an ~20°
angle for ~75 yds, until water is found
in a small shallow pool in a larger
