Mexico trip : Ahuacatlan area
4 May
1100 hrs, Left our campsite W of the turnoff to Ties
lagunas at ~ 0930 hrs and headed W
to a point only a few hundred yards
of our campsite where we stopped to collect
some of the Sceloporus found basking in
exposed sites alongside the road. Many large
J's were particularly exposed, but also rainy
which made collecting difficult. At this
point the pine-oak forest has several
partially-exposed clearings and an
abundance of old and recently-fallen logs.
In addition a limestone rock outcrop
borders the road and continues up/down
slope for a distance of ~ two hundred
yards. Ten Sceloporus torquata were collected
in all, either shot while basking on stumps
or rocks or found under logs. Allen
& Phyllis Green found one Crotalus sp.
~ 18" long shelter inside the base of a stump.
In addition Dave Sweet found 2 Eunectes
sp. under a fallen log. Considering the
vast number of "good" logs turned, though,
this must be considered a continuation
of the trend of few lizards observed on the
trip. While driving away we attempted to
collect several large of Sceloporus
