Mexico trip : Cd. Valles -> W of Xilitla
4 May
0800 hrs to continue W towards Rioverde where we
(cont'd) turned S towards Jalpan the road again enters
the Sierra Madre Oriental along a
beautiful stretch of relatively untouched
thorn forest/deciduous forest, especially
where the road borders the deep canyon of
the Rio Santamaria. At . (mi, W El Trapiche
we stopped along a bald cypress (Taxodium)
lined tributary of the Rio Santamaria.
Several metamorphosing, recently metamorphosing,
and tadpole Rana were collected by
Allen + Sam. More Sceloporus viridilabi
were seen. From here we continued S to
Jalpan and thence E on Mex 120 towards
the town of Xilitla. Just W of the turnoff
towards Tres Lagunas we camped. This site
is situated near the crest of the Sierra in a
relatively untouched pine-oak forest. The
area is extremely dry. We arrived in
camp at dusk and soon retired. This morning
after awakening I took a small bird walk
and found a group of three acorn woodpeckers
and a lone St. Mountain trogon. Several
unidentified hummingbirds and warblers
were also seen.
