Hanken James 1975 Journal Mexico trip: Gomez Farias 3 May 0830 bus was found to have salamanders (2 sets were (cont'd) found in ) and the number examined was limited only by the weight of the bromeliads. Despite this surprise, animals have been truly scarce. Whether this is common at the end of the dry season, or due to the overcast weather conditions is open to debate. Late into afternoon we drove to a partially cleared area alongside the road ~ 1 mi. outside of Gomez Farias. Adjoining the clearing is a formerly plowed field adjoining an extensive rock outcrop vegetated with yucca and thorn forest. Several Sceloporus variabilis were seen among the rocks but none collected. Cnemidophorus were also relatively abundant; three were collected. However, the relative paucity of lizards continues. At eight Sherman live-traps with peanut butter + rolled oats along a line near our campsite (we stayed in the above area) but no animals were caught (no traps were even set off).
