Nototriton richardi
1500 m camp
17 April One + probably 2 (one is small) collected by C. Guyer on
ridgetop across Rio San Rafael from camp. Elev. 1520m.
Both in 10 forest, one under leaf litter, one under moss on the
ground. Both in PM, daylight.
Perhaps there is a microhabitat difference between
picadri + richardi, with richardi (with smaller feet) being
a ground dweller + picadri a tree dweller. Road cuts might
be an interface between these habitats, as both are found there.
19 April Two found in leaf litter - this time in valley of Rio San
Rafael - not on ridgetop opposite camp as with the 2. Again,
these were from leaf litter on the forest floor. Also again,
2 animals together - seems to be a common occurrence in
Nototriton.
1800 m camp
21 April 2 collected in leaf litter at the base of a large tree in 2° growth
forest from which the understory had been recently cleared.
N. richardi always seems to be found in 2's!
