Mt. Chucadee
1 1/2 mi. N + 4 mi. W Burnt Pk., 1480 m, Los
Angeles Co., Calif. [T. 7N, R. 16W, NW 1/4 sec. 9]
26 July Lots of Chickadees here (one was 14 gms!). Birds
(cont) seem to be traveling in flocks (prob. family groups)
Messenger Flat Campground + Lightning Pt. Campground,
near Mt. Gleason, Los Angeles Co., Calif.
27 July Grinnell + Miller show an extensive area of
chickadee range in this Natl Forest but from what I
have seen, the potential habitat is much more spotty.
Collected 2 at Messenger Flat in a rather small area
of pines. S Kaiser heard several others. Lightning Pt
has a much more extensive stand of conifers + here I
got 4. These were all solitary birds rather than in
small flocks as most of the birds on this trip have
been - an interesting fact in view of this is that
3 out of the 4 solitary birds were adult whereas
many of the flocking birds are juv.
1 1/2 mi. N + 1/2 mi. E Mt. Baden-Powell, 2070 m,
Los Angeles Co., Calif. [T. 3N, R. 8W, NW 1/4 sec. 6]
28 July Chickadee pie! We got 14 (I got 9) in no more
than an hour. The chickadees seem to show some
preference for the firs.
