Mtn Chickadee
1 1/2 mi. N + 1/2 mi. W Frazier Mtn., 1720 m, Ventura
Co., Calif. [T. 8 N, R. 20 W, SE 1/4 sec. 9]
25 July I wanted to see if chickadees occurred in the
extensive stands of pinyon pine in this area rather
than only on the Jeffrey pines I collected in yesterday
(only at higher elevations). Indeed they do, + quite
commonly. This means that their potential range
is much greater than it otherwise would have been.
I heard several songs today of varying types. Some
sounded "normal", others had the last not possibly
a shade higher, others (prob. yy birds) quavered
considerably. One bird sang a 4 note song - - - -
Angeles Natl. Forest (NW portion), Los Angeles Co.,
Calif.
25 July The wildlife biologist at Saugus RS said that
(cont.) mtn chickadees are common in the Sawmill mtn
region in the N part of the forest. If so, it is not
shown by Belk or Grinnell + Miller. Tomorrow we
will find out.
