Mt. Chiricahua
1 mi. S + 4 mi. E Odell Butte, 1580 m., Klamath Co., Oregon
[T. 24 S, R. 7 E, SW ¼ sec. 26]
11 July Song normal. Chiricahuas very common here but I refrained
from collecting any since Bob only had 5 left on his Oregon
collecting permit + I decided to save them for a more
distant locality. Bob collected 1 ♀ (DAG 142).
Steens Mtn., Harney Co., Oregon
12 July - I have seen no decent Chiricahua habitat here in any
of the places we have been (see journal) - no conifers except
Juniperus at intermediate elevations.
15 July Martin Creek Range Station, 2060 m., ½ mi. N + ½ mi. E
Chocolate Mtn., Humboldt Co., Nevada [T. 44 N, R. 39 E, NW ¼ sec. 24]
Apparently, Mtn. Chiricahuas are not as restricted to conifers
as I thought - Bob collected 2 juvenile birds from a
family group here in aspen forest. No conifers to any
significant degree for miles.
16 July Saw an adult in the same place Bob got the juveniles
yesterday - probably a parent. It did not cooperate
so I was unable to collect it
½ mi. N + 1 mi. W Frazier Mt., 2150 m., Ventura Co.,
Calif. [T. 8 N, R. 20 W, NE ¼ sec. 15]
24 July Chiricahuas common. S. Kaiser heard the territorial
song + said it was of the normal type. Though one
would expect more juv. than ad. birds 6 out of 7 we collected were adult.
