Mt. Chickadee
8 mi. N + 6 mi W North Yolla Bolly Mtn., 1480 m, Trinity Co.,
Calif [T. 28 N, R. W, NW sec. ]
25 June (cont) ygg were collected (+ were 6-8 days old). - some were used for
Genotyping + tissues were taken from others (see catalogue).
Birds here do not sing "3 kind mice"; the notes are
instead 1 high + 2 lower, w/ the last 2 at the same frequency.
Sounds more like a regular chickadee.
26 June Went out collecting chickadees in morning - ran into 1 pair
up in high conifers that refused to come down low enough
to shoot but seemed very interested in my owl imitations.
Most chickadees at this time of year seem to be in family
groups.
1/2 mi. S + 1 mi. E Good's Mtn., 915 m, Shasta Co, Calif. [T. 29 N,
R. 10 W, N 1/2 sec. 9]
* 26 June Collected the only a chickadee I saw here - it responded to
my being mobbed by several other small passerines (see
journal). This bird had the feathers missing from the top
of its head and this did not seem to me to be the result of
my shooting it => possibly an old injury? Collected from
a black oak -
evergreens nearby.
1/2 mi. S + 1 mi. W Scott Mtn., 1620 m, Trinity Co, Calif.
[T. 39 N, R. 7 W, SE 1/4 sec. 5]
27 June Chickadees fairly numerous here but not exceptionally so.
Song similar to Yolla Bolly site (perhaps not 3rd note a slight
bit higher than the 2nd). I only heard one song.
