Mountain Chickadeer
1 mi. N + 2 mi. W Crockett Pk., 3800 ft., Lake Co., Calif.
20 May Saw first chickadee of trip (see journal) in a black oak - tried
squeaking at it but it showed little effect. I got close enough
to shoot w/ 1/2 load but missed. The bird then moved off
calling constantly and before I could get another shot at it it
flew to the top of a large ponderosa pine + then disappeared.
22 June Telephone Campgrounds, 2010m, 1 1/2 mi N, 1/4 mi W Black
Butte, Glenn Co., Calif. [T. 22 N, R. 9 W, N/W 1/4 sec. 27]
Lots of chickadees here with many calling - I haven't heard a
lot of songs.
22 June 1/4 mi N Black Butte, 2080m., Glenn Co., Calif [T. 22 N, R. 9 W,
N/W 1/4 sec. 27]
Shot a pair of chickadees here (with 1 shot) and also
collected 7 nestlings from a nest which was undoubtelly theirs
(see journal).
22 June 1/4 mi E Anthony Flk., 1950m, Mendocino Co, Calif. [T. 23 N, R. 10
W, SW 1/4 sec. 15]
There seem to be fewer chickadees here than elsewhere
today, although this may be because we got here late
in the day.
Songs of all birds heard today consist of 3 descending
notes ("3 blind mice" according to Susan Kaiser)
