Bamboo
Nov. 12 Hour's been puttering with measurements of culms of bamboo
on Cero Otto and Goo-Goo Peninsula;
Cero Otto culms taper more rapidly than Goo-Goo.
no correlation between root, stems, and length of culm
no correlation between root diam. and number of internodes.
Poor correlation between diam. at 1 m, " " "
measured volumes of culms by summing volumes of
internodes (using length of internodes & diam). For 5 culms
from Goo-Goo, the "Critical Diameter" (= diameter
which when multiplied by
of the culm gives the correct volume for that culm) the
Critical Diameter occurred at the following internodes:
18th, 17, 17, 15, 17, 16, 19, 18, 15, 17,
Poor correlation between root diam. of culm and volume.

For Diam. at 1 meter above ground:
Volume of Culm in cm³ = 90 × (Diam. of culm in mm) - 944.
Density of 3 culms (large size) from Goo-Goo creek
1.276, 1.171, 1.131 (= heavier than water). Fresh culms without
leaves weighed with leaves, and release from remanded
internodes. Leaves not included.
