48 Retamo. This consists of 2 tall posts (all that's left of a ravine or house) in a 1/2-acre clearing. There was scarcely a bigger clearing here years ago. Now it is a sea of vine, cano, and retamo. On our 3 1/2-hour ride covering at least 500 m of elevation and different slope, we saw only a few colibris and cacomixtle. All the bamboo shivering. The big fire in the 1920s must have made a big difference, and Rogel was probably right when he said there need to be many more people in this area. Herschel from pointed out a puma track; not very commencing. Home 5:30 p.m., Berberis darwinii and apple tree still in full bloom, Mar, 10 morning clear (Bariloche). Michael Christie visited last night (their morning) and brought Ellen Pederson's field notes. She set 50 small snare traps at the Hipodromo on June 20, clear, cold, snow, cornmeal, baited with oats and corn meal, night was cold + frosty, and about 15 traps were frozen, the other caught 3 Oryz, 1 also oliv., and 1 bird (Aphrastura). No Eligmo. On July 1 she trapped Carlos Severo with 78 small snare traps. from the road up to the old cave and then along the cliff. Cold and windy. This was one week after the big snow, but the snow had melted. She saw traps on July 1 (1 also tanto, 1 Eligmo in the trap), perpendicular to the cliff and 4 Phyllotis along the cliff, On July 3: 1 also tanto and 1 Eligmo in transect plus 2 also living at base of cliff.
