depths of disappointment to the heights of bafflement in less than a mere 60 sec- onds, Wed Oct,22 I remained in camp today to superintend the preparation of this specimen but Harry went out to the same region where I hunted yes- terday. I returned at 4 P.M. without hav- ing seen a sheep. The hunter said that they had been frightened by the shooting & gone back into the rocks to the north. Today I took a great hunt, we got away at 7 P.M. and after climbing up the white trail to the summit of the rocks west by north of camp, it was our first look at the great gorge cut by the river thru the granite peaks, resplendent sunlight, and it was a sight well worth climbing high to see. There are very few gorges out there, or in fact in the world that vary for surpass it. The cliffs rise almost sheer cliffs for 1000 feet along the stream which shows like a tiny silver ribbon in the depths below. The little river doubles back & forth, twisting & turning about upon itself, cutting & slashing & foaming over rocks or [illegible] swiftly in calm green sheets between vertical walls of granite. At Tarator starting on the summit of the pass one sees a wonderful Pandemonium of saw tooth peaks ragged
