slowly has his neck stretched until he expires
in mirth agony, the one is still a very
real part of the present. And only last
November I heard of an extraordinary
story from a British Press Corps Recruiting
officer at Hanbury Park.
The father of a Chinese recruit who had recently re-
turned from France, one day appeared at
the office to obtain the money due his son.
He was asked why the boy himself did not
apply. He remarked casually "Oh he
burnt him yesterday"
Upon investigation the recruiting
officer discovered that the corps was
known as a "bad egg" in the village; when
he returned from France the elders of
his village and his father had counselled them.
They decided that the boy would probably join
the brigands who were managing the country
and lead them at an attack against
the his home village. Therefore he should
be restrained in some way. But how
to do it was the question, for they objected
to purely killing him. So it was decided,
that the boy without consulting the
principal and the same, that the best way
was to bury him alive. Therefore, with
the sanction of the village elders, this
our points, he was forthwith returned.
