Sunday Nov. 9 we did not hunt today, but laid our skins in the P.M. just and some traps for small mammals on a hill above the village. On the grassy slopes we have seen great colonies of voles but they do not, of course, come down among the rocks & it takes considerable work to get to them. We got at the following morning. Monday Nov. 10 On Monday our first drive a beautiful buck roe deer came out of a ravine and ran down into the main valley where it was stationed. I made a fine running shot getting him squarely thru the heart while he was in mid-air as he leaped over a boulder. A few moments later I saw the two beaters on the hill run toward each other excitedly and feel sure they had seen something beside roe deer. When they came down they reported 7 traps they had been disturbed by some shot and run out directly between them over the next summit. We were trying for following them of course but the climb to the top of the ridge was an ordeal. It was too high.
