had then come too late for me; so I decided to pitch our tents as soon as I had had a look at the country. I spent all that very long day in my sleeping bag, Started at 7 A.M. up the valley. Taking a shortcut over which overlooked the village we came down into the stream bed between into a canyon with almost perpendicular walls of rock on the north side. It was a place of [illegible] picturesquely a jumble of rocks starting into 3 or 4 feet or more I surmounted by a tiny pinnacle. How the materials for building this shrine were ever later transported to the summit is a mystery. The labor of building it, and that of climb must have been tremendous having the feat of climbing there to worship must have given much merit to the poor builders. Farther up the valley we passed two villages when turned off to the right up a branch gorge where the cliffs were almost as tremendous as these below.
