hat got in a manner that I was much & delighted to find a polecat, & it was a remarkable beautiful animal used around with long soft fur. These anim taking to the genus of weasels (Mustela) & I have seldom seen such an extraor- dinary kind of savage as this animal presented. It looked like the original of the Chinese dragon except for its small size: it's long slender body twisted & twined with incredible quickness, every hair was on end, and its snarling little face emitted horrible squeaks and spitting squeals. It saluted & it curling cur with every inch of its body. The fierce little heart was evidently beet up at a night raid after a mammoth family when our trap cut it short. One can easily imagine what consternation of fright the little beast would throw a nest of marmots comfortably smuggled up for the night in the bottom of their burrow. Probably the young marmot were its especial delirata and it would undoubtedly make away with an entire family of six or eight in a few moments for it has this pleasant little habit of biting into their throats & sucking the blood.
