world! The whole forest seemed instantly\nawake. It was as though I had come out\na great room where objects were dimly\nvisible and had suddenly pressed an\nelectric switch. The greens of the tree's\nbushes were flat and larger hint of a\nhundred subtle shades. The flowers,\nyellow, purple, red, blue, white, seemed\nto everyone to lift their faces and ask\nquietly appealing for admiration of their\nand ask for assimilation of their loveliness\nwith respect I saw the old hunter dis-\nmount tie his horse to a tree, and make\nfor a grassy hill at the edge of the forest.\nI hated to leave that great green room\nwhen there was such radiant beauty\non every side. But the deer would\nbe feeding in the open at this time\nof the morning or would not retire\nto the forest for their mid-day sleep until\nthe sun was high in heaven.\nWe climbed upward then the\nlong sweet grass to the very crest of the hill.\nThere we stopped a rest a moment while\nI scanned the burial forest across the\nvalley with my glasses. There seemed\nnothing living in the trees or meadow\nbut as we slowly walked along the\nsummit of the ridge a pair of grouse\nshot like whirring bullets from beneath
