"pleasing face The old man had a
"Sai" of greeting for me but returned
not a word. The young fellow tried
by signs to carry on a conversation
limited to the animals they had killed.
I was interested to see what sort of
greeting they would he if the animal
at the youth. His two daughters &
an old man were waiting near the
door, the latter approached advanced
with a "Sai". The hunter returned the
greeting in kind but that was all.
For his two daughters there was never
a birth a word, and only for his infant
son, if 3 years, did he break his silence.
The girls unloaded the ponies, put
the skins into the log house & they
all retired to the youth.
But all rumors are by no means true.
Korde is an exception & most of the
danger I have met this taciturnity
is individual for usually they
are not cordial return greetings.
Buntrocke the young hunter
came to our camp about 3 P. M. altho'
I had seen the same for them early
in the morning. I learned afterwards
that the old man was the very per-
somification of independence and
never moved & acted in any way.
