Gray Whale Habits Saulend Capt. Wilson says that [illegible] almost the summer in middle or end of November they gray whales begin to appear at Uruma. They are all going south and [they are] [illegible] tip's not 9:10 have large foetals. Later the males appear in numbers and but few females are taken. When the females begin to come a few of them are weak, then there is no young ones are with the females, when they are going south and and [illegible] they are all travelling steadily and are so heavy with young that they can be easily killed. The probably have their calves in the sea. End of 9:10 from Uruma that follows sea, for they are almost ready to be born when they are here. These whales apparently come from the Ohotsk Sea where they spend the summer. Capt Wilson has seen them there in great numbers - in this summer I say they are never travelling when up there. After the females, come males which also travel steadily southward. The south migration is finishing about the middle of January at Uruma so that the whales have taken about December 10 pass.
