Blue Whale On Thursday Capt. Nelson killed a Blue Whale that was down for 50 min. its first time [illegible] & when it came up spouted 20 times, & the second time it was under 40 minutes (time by clock). Usually they are down 15 to 20 minutes. Capt. Nelson says that it is by no means always possible to tell the sport of a Blue Whale from that of a Finback, but frequently he can do so because the sport of the former looks whiter than that of the latter, & cle- speeds up for the clearness of the air etc. Blue whale spouts at [illegible] twice as high as a Finback. Noise Blue Whales make a tremendous noise when they spout. The tone is about same as that of Finback but much colder generally. If there is a calm sea & a fog the noise of a Blue Whale's sport could be heard 3 or 4 miles. Under ordinary circumstances Blue Whales spout from 8 to 15 times at a rising, generally. Shot a Blue Whale at 7 P.M. It towed the ship & [illegible] crewmen feel speed astern came till 11 P.M., then took head down 6 mile & hour - at 11 P.M. slow down they stood, to 11/4 M.
