17 408 Gray Whale 3 Jan, 12 Uresan The whitest whale I have yet seen. The peduncle and both sides & fins are covered with blotches of white about 10" long x 4" wide, of fairly regular in size - the edges of the blotches are irreg- ular (scribble) - mid ventral ridge of peduncle ex placis dark black as its vast dorsal ridge except for a circular patch of white, about 12" in diameter. On the back the white patches are replaced by small white blots or circles very thickly scattered. From fins forward the sides of throat & breast are streaked with long gray lines about 1/4" wide. Right banner of mandible & lip white & gray mixed "pepper salt". Right side rostrum for white way "pepper salt." Apparently many small barnacles had fastened her. Dorsal ridge & rostrum almost all white with but few gray specks - very rough apparently from parasites - Left side rostrum like top - almost white. Flukes Above black thinly circled with white Below . thickly " " " Fin Below has two broad longitudinal bands from tip downward the one toward the joint edge being longer.
