We picked up at the end of the days
hunting. By this time the whales had gotten
together - were all around us - on every
side, spout after spout into the air &
the water was white with foam from the
carbing fleches. Once I saw two months
off already standing on their heads in
the water, turning their tails from side
to side as if in play. Again a big fellow
rose on the port side, no close - but
beside the Flanner that the gun could not
be turned down, and blew it an my face.
A bunch of the vessel threw me off my
feet just as he was coming to the
surface, but scrambling to my knees
I snapped my camera just before he
got down. Catching him with the
flippers still distended. At his due
was away a short arm & as the steam
rose swirling about he came up right
under the bow - "Look out" yelled the
captain, and at the wild downwards
came the crashing roar of an
gun; the whale threw his flippers
high in the air shoving them
as thin he would throw off the stage
barrows, turn back downward &
dive. The huge lines and - the
rollers as fast one after another were
not with the terrific rush
