pointed in their direction, and the signal for fire, and almost at once watching the harpoon line I distinctly saw a column of spray shoot up into the air, then swiftly tangle itself. The whales were coming in our direction and soon we were right among them. I stationed myself in the bow beside the harpoon gun while camera in hand waited for re-appearance of one whale who had gone down for the first time. Soon I saw the long smooth slick of green water which showed that the riball was coming to the lift I could swing my camera in that direction, the huge animal burst from the water sending a column of spray high into the air. He was diving again in a second but the Captain said "watch the starboard bow sir here comes one there I think". Hard had the words left his mouth when a cloud of spray was sent with our very faces as the whale were right under the bows. During my camera about I pressed shutter just before the crash of the harpoon gun sounded, and during this flash.
