trines taken, and occasionally a
partridge is killed - a short trine
before my arrival a large partridge
had been poisoned near the lake.
Other were once frequently trapped &
many martens are still taken - also
minks. No workrats or rabbits are
found on the island.
I spent four days collecting at Shannon's
gan Table and secured a number of
birds, besides a few white-footed mice,
two rats and one shrew. These mice were
all caught almost old stump & logs
near the lake shore, as were the rats
& shrew. I found a number of mice
in the traps partly eaten, usually
with the head & eyes completely gone.
I believe it was the work of shrews
but also I baited several traps with
meat & mice, I was unable to get
any specimens in that particular
place! The woods were full of
the Sooty Grosbeak (Leucragapus socon
see fuliginosus) but the male birds
were exceedingly hard to find.
