West Barnstable Mass 35 1874 Nov. 6. were killed. From this place we trucked on to "[illegible] field" when saw bury of at least 30 large quail some wild sort of the road, and truck into the [illegible] scrub that I have seen upon the Cape. Then we followed them until dark but they behaved so very badly, rising out of range running hundred of yards immediately after being startled, taking to the trees that we bagged only two birds. Total W.B. quail 2, Buttrick quail [illegible], grouse 2, Molin quail 2. Packed up this evening for a start home to-morrow morning. Crosbills (C. Am.) Sitta Canadensis, and Chryson. pinus are all very abundant here the two first species more so than I ever saw them around Cambridge. Saw also one very fine & Picus villosus to day and a flock of Eremophila cornuta. Soripe (G. Wilb) have taken up their winter quarters along the river and we also heard Portana Carolina in the same locality yesterday. Sturnella magua was abundant as usual. Saw Circae [illegible] Hudsonicus nearly every day and stated on from a change of Bushes when it was apparently watching some domestic fowls that were perching in the barn within a few yards seemingly unmindful of its presence. Nov. 7 Left W. Barnstable at 1 & arrived in Boston by noon.
