382 1876 MASS. (Middlesex Co.) Monday Oct. 2 Helminthophaga celata, 2 y.y., Concord Mass. Arrivals: D. palmarum anad., B. atrapa et calendulae ann., Zon. albicollis gen. or 1 D. fluvica jact giving way to D. communis Hel. suffiequilla, D. virgata at Cambridge at morning. Clear and a most lovely day. Driven up to Concord last night bringing Smuffy with me. This morning started off with Jim's horse and drove down to "Holly" where I tied. Beat over most of the woods'k ground but failed to start any birds though Smuffy worked with considerable courage & persistence. Got up two grouse one of which I fired a long shot at. Noticing numbers of small birds I next went to work to shoot a few and in the course of an hour or so took 8 specimens: 2 D. palmarum, 1 D. virgatus, D. cristata & 1 Hel. suffiequilla (full pl.). I was about giving it up and turning towards home when I noticed two small warblers in a little company of D. virens which were feeding among some low briars. After watching them a moment I became convinced that they were bird-netting new to me and was about to shoot when both entered some thick scrub oaks & I lost them for a time. I shot time after this I saw what I took to be one of them fly out into the briars again and quickly approaching it, shot, and to my great delight picked up a fine specimen of Hel. celata in full plumage. Afterwards searched for the other but in vain. Whether it was the same or not I am unable to say but both looked alike when I first observed them. Spent the P.M. killing my birds. Arrivals were Hel. celata, D. palmarum, per, B. atrapa annul., Zon. albicollis gen. or. Still remaining, I noted Parula Ann!, D. marianae, D. caerulescens per., D. fluvica getting poor, Pipit syrphoth, Hirundo Can.
