376 MASS. (Middlesex Co.) 1876. Sept. 13 Last Chaetura pelagica at Yscohilus, clobris Cloudy with light gust. Took the 2 P.M. train for Concord meeting Jim at Porter's. Arriving at 6. we drove down to the sniper meadow. I had my pointer "Smuggler" this being the first time that he had taken the field. Trumph. Battrick joined us on the meadow. Eight snips were started by the combined efforts of all three, and long bird of them I was shot, only two shots being missed. I walked a few hundred yards in all and killed two snips in two shots. The birds lay remarkably well and Jim's dog made a number of points. Leaving here we drove over to Walls when Jim hunted for woodcock while I remained in the buggy. He started his in a very short time and killed two of them. Smuggler did with either to his credit or discredit, W.B. snips 2 Sept. 14 Clear and a superb day! I started off with Jim's horse after breakfast and drove first down to Walls when I tied and commenced to hunt for two woodcock which Jim left the last night. Found them very near the road and worked the points on them for some time but without getting him to point. Finally started one of them in some rather want, birds shot at it, as I thought without effect but following on in the direction in which it flew, Smuggler suddenly came down handsonly on a stiff point And I found the woodcock lying dead a few feet in front of his nose. After this drove down to Lomestad and came back by Sandy pond shooting a few ins. J Betos Penns from the buggy & missing another. Saw a Woodcock, 1 high Chaetura pelagica. I found Chaetura plega the last W. B.
