Saw Scelophagus ferrugineus (small fish) for the last time yesterday and to day. Shot Pans after 2.15 & 3, D. discolor 8 M. varia 1 8, Setch. cuticella 1 8, Gonophila lucida 1 8 Ardetta cyllia 1 8. Parulas Ann. was excessively abundant everywhere. The Ardetta started from the road in front of the barn and lit in a bush on the water. I walked up to within about 10 paces then shot it with my Stephens pistol. It fell broken winged to the water and swam rather slowly cross a ditch to the shore when it availed my approach without any effort at concealment. When I put out my hand it struck at it with wonderful rapidity and dexterity of aim driving the point of its sharp bill through the skin. Its stroke was as usual however comparatively feeble. It also ruffled up its feathers like dis a wounded Botaurus and uttered an angry squawking noise. When pushed in the bush it sat with head drawn in and frequently jetted up its tail. Its stomach was fairly crammed with white cotton wool. The skin in the stomach threw small parasitical worms and around the intestines many large ones.
