Point Lepranx N.B. 299 1876. (April 15) Posetes graminus - Tardus pallat & migratorius Spizella monticola Bagulus Petrape - After dinner went down agin Ston going out in the boat with Mr. J. and got just off the point while I sat under the rocks, I killed an old Squaw & spiff, and a butter bill cost the latter a fine adult. & The first I shot flying as it rose from the water the latter was one of fine that came swiftly past me within good range returning their peculiar murmuring as they flew. I also missed a good shot at an adult & O. just visible that came by Mr. Stone shot two & O. Am. from the boat. A good many M. serrator flies; they seem to keep invariably much higher above the water than the other birds and usually fly in single file. Single ospreys often continually flying about but none came within range. The flight of the old Squaw is peculiar and serves to distinguish it at once from any other bird. It is somewhat more erratic that in its sections than the other ducks and there is a certain peculiar dip to the wings; sometimes these numbers look as if they can acting independently of each other but this of course is only apparent. Arrivals of small birds, now Posetes graminus several; Tardus pallasi members; Tardus migratorius number. Rain has no & sensible since the 12th. Took a walk back in the woods in P.M. 4 saw Bagulus Petrape & Spizella monticola. Had a lovely sunset off the point.
