Arg., Chry. pinus 223 Portana Norboreensis Pica villons MASS. (Middlesex Co.) 1875 (Nov. 5) than I put in two squab charges and snapped at wood birds within short range but of course without success, finally watching two quail down into a maple swamp for food and had starting one win looking for the other when I stepped right into the middle of a fresh berry growl of about a dozen bird, which gave me a fair chance as they ran but against which my "squib" won of course useless. We hunted for thin birds but a short distance when Charles appeared with the carryall and we returned to the house in time for dinner. With old Dart and plenty of shells I could easily have bagged 15 quail; such chances always come when least expected. I took only 4 small birds: 2 Parus atr 1 Guaca and a g Sitta Carolinensis. Saw a few Chry. pinus and numbers of C. tristis. Stone shot a very fine S. Pallasii. Two Arg. villors were shot by Arthur Smith in Brooklin Oct. 31st. Morton started 6 woodcock at Concord on the 1st inst. and the same number the next day, two fine Portana Norboreensis have killed at Wakefield by Gordon during the past month, Pica villors in our yard gw.
