On the way back I happened to spy an Achatins Batramius standing perfectly motionless within 15 yds of the wagon: Stepping the horn I found it was too near to shoot so waited a few minutes in hopes that it would fly, but it only shulked off slowly through the grass and once squatted close for an instant; evidently it imagined its person &cwas afraid to draw our attention & having work. Of finally lost it sitting but found it so fat as to be utterly impracticable as a specimen. On the skirts of the town saw a flock of about 30 Amphix edromus feeding on the berries of a wild cherry tree. Reached the home by 5 P.M, C. peregrinus was abundant everywhere on the Commons & put out frequent intervals down under the horse's feet. The gumm informed us that we are too late for the plane shooting & I think it must be so as we did not see a single bird today. Pocetis gran & Pet.
