Sept. 30 Char and cold with high N wind. Storm came up after breakfast but we Decided not to start until the afternoon. About noon Barstow called I both took [illegible] to dinner with me. At about 4 P.M. started for the reams with storm taking old Bart, had some fair lively shooting on rails lazy flight of which I shot 4. Started a magnifier when I find at him he set his wings failed , but ten yards & apparently hit in a thicket of tall bushes interlaced with briars. Although I hunted at last 30 minutes with the dog I was unable to either.
