Rye Beach, N. H. 88 1872 July 23-24 July 23. Warm and cool with W. wind. In forenoon saw a large flock of Geese and the first Gambetta scholarus (sic). Last night I heard the first Dbl. singing migrating. In the afternoon found a stiff which I had kind of D. Philbrick around into the old pond and put up my shooting stand; was much surprised at seeing large Striped Snail (Coluber vertes) that I had struck in the mud and partially drained, glide tail foremost well and smoothly for several yards; this would destroy many theories concerning the agency of the scale in locomotion.
