he presented a most beautiful appearance, frosted over as he was with minute air bubbles and we paddled around him dveral times before picking him up. I & myself each made a most wonderful cross shot on two mergansers killing both birds dead at our 85 yds. I used my Jones B. loads. I was much pleased with its shooting. I also shot a Buto Plana. at a great height cutting him in the wings but losing sight of him as he crashed down I could not find him. One of the black ducks was wounded in the wing & made up the bank into the wood at a most surprising rate of speed. He went in about 50 yds. I should certainly by hand lost him in the thick brush had I been active. Shot who found & pointed him as he lay crouched among the alders. Saw both flocks of grackles and cut for other inland birds. Coming down the lake in the steambot I saw several Phalaropus hyperboreus, had my first good chance to observe their habits. Their flight was very like that of Calidris and they resembled that bird
