"Umbagog July 24 - 1874 July 24th clear warm and pleasant. Left Boston at 8.15 on the Eastern road and arrived at the Lake by 11 P.M. after a most lonely ride through the notch by moonlight. Saw a Blue Jay Alighting at Bryant's pond. Took possession of my last year's room and turned in at once. 25th clear very warm in forenoon but good breeze in P.M. Unpacked my things in forenoon that is as many as I have one trunk & velin of ammunition having been left at Bethel as Clerk had too many a load to bring them up to night. After dinner took my John's gun & with 7 cartridges all I had, strolled out to try for Cock. Put up four and killed 2 in silver shots. Shot behind rather poorly pointing fairly but when when three birds jumped together from a spring roll quail and a fine double shot of which I killed only the first. The birds filled the woods with thin chirping & Glory for my best shot.
