July 4—1874 Nantucket It would be impossible as wind & tide run against us. At this juncture a talkative fellow, Mr. C. Lehman by name, made his appearance on the scene & offered to take us out in the harbor all day for 2.00, which offer we accepted & are soon standing across to Coalm pt. in his little schoone rigged craft. We spent the whole day sailing about in sight of the town with a very light breeze occasionally making a sally or the terms altogether enjoying ourselves well upon the whols. I secured 8 S. Paradise & 8 or 10 S. friends & 1 S. antillano. We made several good shots into flocks sitting on the small points sailing up fairly within range. They are very shy of a sail boat when on the arms however, I rarely come within shot. M. secured a dog fish from a fisherman & skinned it at the deck of our boat.
