Jun 12 - 1874 209 Old friend Coats, breeds in Mt. Auburn. Got also a nest of Cy. cristata with 2 eggs. Coast Sunday I drove over to see J.A. Purdin & he took me to see a young [illegible] by name J.Wallum who had two broods of Serp. asio In one the parents were both red & the three young also of the same color. The other brood of four were all gray with a red mother (cast taken) I bought one of the young & it is now doing well: although not fully fledged it finds itself tearing up & devouring small birds &c. when just in its cage. Jun 12 Cloudy & misty with heavy thunder showers in the morning. In V.P.N. drove up to Rock madron where I listened in hopes of hearing the marsh owls but in vain. I cannot find one any where this season. Drove next through "Prospect St." tried my horse near the top of the hill The bushes & grass were saturated with moisture & I was soon wet through but was handsomely repaid by a great extraordinary run of luck in finding nests.
