May 1874
May 18 A most lovely May morning but cloudy & sunny afternoon. After breakfast had my horse harness'd & drove up to Rock meadow where I spent a pleasant hour listening to the birds. Saw several new arrivals, Myiod. pusillus, Lard. maculatus D. striata (mind) and Contopus lonchus.
Yesterday I saw the first Trochilus cobitis. D. coronates is still here and it seems strange to see them associated with such birds as D. striata from which they are ordinarily separated in the migration by an interval of a week or more.
Hear'd also a single Coccyzus Americanus (I am not quite positive of my ability to distinguish the notes)
The Contopus pives on the old haunt at Wampy oak's; at intervals of a half minute or so uttered his gheck - phibeair or simply phibeair, from the title of an ancient physician. (Description of notes taken on th 18th.)
On the Newtown Road saw my albino robin in the same place again.
The apple trees are just putting out their leaves, the Shad bush is in bloom in the woods, as are the cherry & pear trees in the garden.
The lilacs are still in full blast and the bird chorus is now nearly arrived at its full perfection. How short is Spring after all our winter longings for its arrival.
