Sept. 1873 Wilton, Maine 125 1873 Sept. 20. In galley this morning with S. P. Hunt. The steambot was "hung up" at the mouth of Couch river while attempting to come in in the dark this evening. Thursday Sept. 21 Chas & cold. Spent the day about the house in P. M. Hearing the bird that yesterday. Fished an hour or so in the river with my new rod & caught two small fish. The sunset was extremely fine this evening, the forest changing parts being fairly flooded with brilliant light. " 22 Chas & warmer than part few days. After breakfast took a trip up C. river in the skiff & shot six birds, two Pawtucknowe dr. This bird (P. hubmies?) has not a high note like Patrice; the note should made Aug. 11 is frequently preceded by the sharp che-chit or chuchit-chut, and the single chirp corresponding to that of Patr. is much louder & more fululent & not in any way to be confounded with it. Then these sets of notes are the only ones I have heard to be sure of, though the bird will sometimes give a spattering combination of them all in rapid succession. It is on the whole much more silent & less chirgy th. Patr., keeps almost upchasing on the rise & spreads very high up, has a heavier & more chirpy flight, & although often seen near does not as a rule associate with that species. Heard several Redbreast orations; this note (how made only am?) is not to be distinguished from the "chuck"
