122 Sept. 1873 1873. Whiton, Maine. Sept. 13 duck but got no shots. Arrived at Sydney found that we had left our water at the lake home, so had to give up our proposed stay of several days. The two brothers Allen & a Mr. Perry went up on the boat with us. Had a Calderis arenaica sent down to me by Bostwick from the Richardson villa, to day. Sunday Sept. 14 Cloudy & cold with occasional rain. Started from Musellany on the boat at 10.30. At the outlet saw a fine pair of Eagles (Aquila) on a mossyificent adznt & the other with as little white on both had a tail they were beating about over the meadow like marsh hawks, fighting occasionally or low stars. Just as the boat came in to the landing at Whiton a flock of five Dux discors son ahead & swaying by, offering a good shot, had we been ready for them. & just the same time a large flock of Buttoris indoricius passed overhead the first I have seen here. Bostwick Greenough & party around this P.M. & shut up five wood cock in "the ravins" after a short time. " 15 Clear & cool. Went out on the boat this morning & getting into my float at the outlet sailed about the lake the greater part of the day, shooting a pair of YX4 Stone herndo near the outlet (getting only one). Boat left the P.M. we saw a fin bear & followed him about for a short time until at the fourth shot I was lucky enough to shoot a rifle bullet
